Future of GDPR

Athena @ ST 24 May 2018

GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) will come into force tomorrow, affecting all organizations that do business within the European Union. Here's a partial summary of our robot Athena's view of the future of GDPR.  Tomorrow is only the beginning. We can expect its influence to be strongly felt for at least the next five years until it becomes part of good business practice.

Sentiment analysis

Sentiment towards GDPR was increasingly negative up until April with reports of organizations ignoring the regulation or delayed in their ability to be ready for the new data protection regime by tomorrow. But as the deadline approached stories began to change towards the positive aspects that can be attained after implementation.

Pie charts

This is the first time Athena has reported a tipping point in the past reflecting the fact that GDPR has long been coming with most organizations aware of the need to comply with the new rules.

But, GDPR is only now gaining traction and at an early stage. With tomorrow's deadline approaching we can expect GDPR to evolve rapidly as the EU imposes fines, competition uses the regulations to its advantage and the public become a crowd-sourced means of keeping organizations up on their toes. We've already seen some organizations go out of business e.g. Klout, who previously relied on selling your data but now cannot do so. More may follow, and the costs of compliance may escalate as GDPR is strengthened in the future!

Sectors

Sectoral responses have been mixed depending on just how much personal data is collected by various industries. But overall response has been muted. It remains to be seen whether this low-key response was the correct approach or whether the regulators will adjudge that insufficient progress has been made and impose heavy fines and other penalties on the worst transgressors.

Athena used the sources below as the top ones to create this report and determined which embedded forecasts are included in this Trend Alert. She found 330 forecasts in seconds on the 24th May 2018 to allow us to publish this summary in less than an hour. She can turn these into PowerPoint slides and Audio files in minutes too as you wish, or we can prepare a full customized and professionally written brief for you to order covering all 330 forecasts.

Athena does show duplicates to aid your understanding of themes as well as contradictory forecasts. She may also show near-duplicates. You can speed read past the duplicates and near-duplicates if you wish, though the latter may show additional information. You can use the contradictory, and likely uncertain forecasts she finds to imagine different scenarios. The future is unpredictable, but we can examine the possibilities and choose our preferable future from the choices she presents.
Athena is apolitical. She will report forecasts from different viewpoints however distasteful that might be to our own values. Wearing rose-colored glasses is not her purpose; reporting potential futures is. So, we recommend you check her veracity before responding to her extracted forecasts.

Just like humans, Athena can be fallible. Do recognize that you and your associates are biased too. But whereas you tire, make mistakes and only recognize what interests you, she does not. She might miss or misinterpret as you do, but with far less frequency and she'll take uncomfortable truths and alternative ideas in her stride. But, please let us know if you feel her bias can be reduced. We want to do our best for you. And, as with any research, you should check and triangulate her findings for yourself.
