Developing your response: This story is to help those looking to create major breakthroughs through radical transformation rather than incremental improvement. It provides advanced ideation thinking frames for looking at ‘What’s over the horizon" through different lenses. 360-degree thinking is about learning from the past to gain a better understanding of the present, so as to make better decisions for the future. It is about thinking in a way that allows you to see the big picture, while also paying careful attention to the little fine details stemming from every situation you face.

Each slide gives you a perspective on change and together they show potential strong opportunities for change or risk. The more you carefully consider the better the likelihood of your having an all-round view of the possibilities for change. The less you complete the more the likelihood of shallow thinking and poor decision-making.

Here are ways to consider possible emerging change:

• Conventional litanies: Look for and list key events, issues and trends that are not connected and appear discontinuous to the trend or issue you are researching. The result often expresses either a feeling of helplessness (what can I do?) or apathy (nothing can be done!) or projected action (why don't they do something about it?).
• Social causes: Look for and list statements invoking actors and their structural relationships, such as, “If only government would manage water better there would be no shortages.” These statements tend to suggest incremental policy changes as the solution to problems.
• Structural issues: Look for and list grand, “big picture” statements that challenge assumptions on the previous two levels, such as, “We need a Left-Green water system, not a market system!”
• Emotional experiences: Look for and list deep stories, the collective archetypes, the unconscious, of often emotive, dimensions of the problem or the paradox (seeing population as non-statistical, as community, or seeing people as creative resources.
• Future dichotomies: Look for and list contrasting "opposites, e.g. beliefs, values, assumptions.
• Future paradoxes: Look for and list illogical or contradictory beliefs, that may point to an underlying truth. "Less is more" is an example of a paradox.
• Individual meaning: Look for and list ‘what are our assumptions? What interests do we represent? What might we have overlooked?
• Shared meaning: Look for and list - What unquestioned civilizational ‘givens’ are involved? How are they observed? What effects do these deeply embedded drivers have? Are these effects acceptable? If not, how can they be moderated or changed? How are they ‘coded’, legitimized, applied in various contexts? What frameworks of theory and practice do they depend on?
• Capability and behavior: Look for and list the physical and behavioral aspects of human beings encompassing biology, health, reproduction, physical well-being, and illness as well as behavior oriented psychology.
• Physical world: Now list - What is happening ‘out there’ that is of interest to us/our organization? What are the key drivers? What are the more subtle counter forces that may signal new phenomena, new issues, directions, and opportunities?
• Unintended consequences: Look for and list potential unintended consequences through actions of people—and especially of government — that are unanticipated or "unintended."
• Wildcards: Look for and list events which are highly unlikely but would have a huge impact if it did occur.
• Possible inflections: Look for and list potential moments of future dramatic change, especially in the development of a company, industry, or market
• Plausible changes: Look for and list - How might our homes & families change? How might our work change? How might our hobbies & leisure differ? How might we travel & communicate? How might childhood & education differ? How might our environment change? How might government & economy differ?
• Potential solutions: Now reformulate stories/and images from the previous thinking frames, going up the layers to recast the issue/problem at the highest level from the most coherent perspective you can conceive. Ask yourself how your reformulation might look if you had unlimited space, or time or cost or a combination of these.
• Preferable futures: Now formulate - What sort of action is needed to bring about your preferable future?
